BJ Davis-Ray Recruiting Profile

BJ Davis-Ray Recruiting Profile

By Sam Kayser

Andy Enfield and the SMU staff have had a busy, and successful, first season down in Dallas, Texas. With the ACC Tournament set to begin next week, the Mustangs have compiled a 22-9 record in what’s been a positive first season under head coach Andy Enfield. However, their biggest wins of the entire season may have come back in September and November, when Andy Enfield and his staff reeled in four of ESPN’s Top 100 players in a span of 57 days.

One of the more intriguing prospects of the bunch, BJ Davis-Ray, was the final domino to fall SMU’s way when he committed to Enfield and Co. back on November 14th. Davis-Ray, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard out of JSerra Catholic High School in California, is known as a versatile two-way guard who consistently impacts winning on both ends of the floor. He has good size for his position, has long arms, and is a consistent competitor on the defensive end. Offensively, Davis-Ray is a creative playmaker who plays with great pace, thrives in transition opportunities, and can score the ball from all three levels.

Davis-Ray’s high school career has been well-traveled, including a 2023 National Championship with Link Academy, an experience that helped shape the rest of his high school career. “Winning a championship as a sophomore was a great experience, I feel like I got the college experience early,” he said. “I learned a lot about myself and what a brotherhood is.”

Before committing to SMU this past November, Davis-Ray was courted by some of college basketball’s premier programs. Kansas, Alabama, Creighton, SMU, Arkansas, Saint Louis and many others were among the schools that were in the mix for the talented four-star prospect. Davis-Ray took two official visits this fall, but something clicked with SMU and Coach Enfield: “SMU came and watched me this spring and summer and they felt like my size and skill as a shooting guard would be a good fit for their program. Coach Andy comes from an NBA background and that’s my ultimate goal.”

It wasn’t just Davis-Ray who felt the natural connection, but the coaching staff as well. One staff member told me: “We are getting a hard worker, a player that wants to be really good, along with being a great young man with great character.”

When asked what he would immediately provide when he steps on campus next season, Davis-Ray told Locker Room Access, “SMU is getting an ultra-competitive guy who’s going to impact winning. Right away, I feel like I bring versatility playing on and off the ball, a two-way player and scoring at all three levels.”

With Davis-Ray and his classmates set to arrive, SMU fans should be excited for the future.
